A Love Letter Written in Furniture: Finn Juhl's Bedroom Returns to Paris

During Paris Design Week, House of Finn Juhl presented a special relaunch: a bedroom interior that Finn Juhl once dedicated to his partner, Hanne Wilhelm Hansen. The colourful furniture series — a bed, a lounge chair, a small table and a glove cabinet — was originally launched in 1961, and remains one of the most personal and unconventional projects of Finn Juhl's career.

The relaunch was exhibited at gallery Triode Design in Paris during September.

When it first launched, the bedroom interior was as much a declaration of love as it was a bold departure from the design ideals of its time. With its striking use of colour and unexpected combinations of materials, the collection marked a new aesthetic direction, moving away from the language that had defined his breakthrough in the 1940s. The result was an extravagant, graphic world in which the furniture formed a single, unified whole — reflecting both his creative ambition and his relationship with Hanne.

With this relaunch, the story comes full circle. Following the earlier return of the Glove Cabinet, House of Finn Juhl is now bringing the complete interior into production for the first time: the distinctive Television Chair, its companion Television Table, and the sculptural Wilhelm Hansen Bed.

The Television Chair, with its cylindrical backrest and unusual combination of wood and steel, stood apart from Danish furniture design at the time — today it's crafted in cherry wood with a burnished steel frame and untreated brass castors, alongside the low, elegantly angled Television Table, whose proportions nod to Japanese aesthetics.

At the heart of the room is the Wilhelm Hansen Bed: a sculptural piece in cherry wood with wengé detailing, combining organic form with a light, almost floating presence. Its painted panels — inspired by Goethe's theories of colour — echo the same palette found in the drawers of the Glove Cabinet, tying the whole interior together.

Seen today, the 1961 bedroom stands as one of the clearest expressions of Finn Juhl's drive for renewal — a rare, deeply personal glimpse into love, creative freedom, and the courage to forge his own path.
