Five Of The Best Chairs

Expectations of a dining chair are high. To start off with they need to look good because they are key in providing offices, dining rooms and kitchens with a touch of personality. They obviously need to be functional, and somewhere which is comfortable to sit. They also need to be durable, as they really do put up with a lot. Not only are they used for three meal times a day, but in our house, they are also used for homeschooling, hours upon hours working from home, providing seating for those all important tea breaks, coping with small children wriggling and squirming and up until last year, dinner parties with friends and family.

We are very much looking forward to soon visiting the hotels, work spaces, restaurants and cafes which we have provided new seating for throughout the lockdowns, and eagerly await their opening.

Below are our five favourite dining chairs and all have been selected with style, comfort and durability in mind.

Oaki Dining Chair from Northern

Oaki Dining Chair by Northern was inspired by the simplicity and artistry that characterises traditional Japanese wood craftsmanship. The designer set out to conceal the chair’s joins, giving Oaki a refined, uniquely weightless character that looks seamless in appearance. It is crafted in solid oak and finished in smoked oak, light oiled oak or with a dark black sheen. For a bit of extra comfort, the chair is available with a padded leather seat.

Wick Dining Chair for Design House Stockholm

The Wick Chair designed by Jesper Stahl and Karl Malmvil for Design House Stockholm has a unique shape which is inspired by the woven structure of a basket. The backrest is made from bent wood and then plaited to secure the shell into place. Not only does this provide comfort but also makes this chair very strong. The other thing we really like about this chair is that it's stackable which is perfect when space is tight. The chair comes in oak or ash veneer and the legs are made of solid wood/lacquered or chrome steel tubing and also available on a swivel base.

J80 Chair for FDB Mobler

J80 Chair by Jorgen Baemark for FDB Mobler is one of their most iconic designs. With it's handwoven seat and beautifully finished details in solid wood, it's a timeless piece. It is available in multiple colours but it is now available in steel blue and the one we really love (and guaranteed to add personality to a room), ruby red.

109 Chair by House of Finn Juhl

109 chair is a very elegant and timeless design. But it is also incredibly comfortable (something which was really important to Finn Juhl). The backrest and seat are both upholstered and the armrests are shaped with a small hollowing at the tip, which perfectly fits the plum of a thumb. This is a chair which you can sit in for hours - so not only is it suitable for dining but also as a conference room chair. The chair is manufactured in oak or walnut and with upholstery in fabric or leather.

J175 for FDB Mobler

Another chair from FDB Mobler, the J175 Åstrup chair, designed by Isabel Ahm. As you can see it's a very organic and minimalist chair and we think it's mastered that fine balance between design and function. The chair comes in either Oak or Walnut.
